Misdemeanors

Misdemeanors are often viewed as minor criminal charges, but they are actually quite serious. Misdemeanors are distinguished from violations in that, upon conviction for a misdemeanor you could be placed on probation and be required to serve jail time. The maximum length of probation for a misdemeanor is five years, and the maximum amount of jail time that can be imposed is one year. Fines on misdemeanor charges can also be thousands of dollars more than on violation cases.

If you are charged with a misdemeanor, don't make the mistake of assuming it's a minor charge. Consult an attorney.
